UPDATE: KOGI SIEC FIXES OCTOBER 19 FOR LG ELECTIONS

The date of the state’s local government elections, set by the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), is October 19, 2024.
The Kogi SIEC’s decision to hold the council election may have something to do with the July 11, 2024, Supreme Court ruling that gave the local government administration financial autonomy.
The Apex Court declared that the caretaker committee was unconstitutional in the eyes of the constitution and that local governments nationwide should begin receiving their allocations straight from the Accountant-General of the Federation as of the judgment date.
During the House plenary session on July 5, 2024, the Kogi State House of Assembly decided to extend the terms of the Transition Committee Chairmen by an additional six months.

The extension followed a letter that Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo wrote to the House.
However, Mamman Nda-Eri set the October 19th election date during the first stakeholders meeting on Tuesday in Lokoja, when he presented the election schedule for approval.
He gave every political party in the state his word that the council election processes would be inclusive, transparent, and compliant with election regulations.
According to Mamman Eri, the fixes were made in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, which gave the state Independent Electoral Commission the necessary authority.
He said a comprehensive timetable schedule of activities has been prepared to ensure a transparent, fair and credible electoral process.
‘’We assure you that these activities have been designed with utmost consideration for inclusivity, transparency and adherence to electoral laws. In the timetable made available, each candidate for the counsellorship election is expected to deposit N100,000 to the commission while 250,000 is to be deposited by the Chairmanship candidate.
“Similarly, anyone who has been dismissed from the public or civil service of the Federation or a state or local government area or private employment is not qualified to contest for any of the positions.
“Also, anyone who has been found guilty of an offence involving narcotic drugs or any other psychotropic substance by any court in Nigeria or tribunal in Nigeria or any other country cannot view fo any of elective position in the Election,” he stated.
While soliciting the continued support and collaboration of stakeholders for the successful conduct of the election, the SIEC Chairman urged the political parties to strictly adhere to the rules of the game.
