The Lagos State Government is combating the sale, use, and distribution of banned Styrofoam and single-use plastics. On Thursday, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, destroyed ₦5M worth of Styrofoam packs seized in various locations over the past month.

The agency conducted the activity in the Epe area of the state in collaboration with officials from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Speaking at the incineration site, Corps Marshal of the Agency, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), stated, “The State Government has declared zero tolerance on the sales, usage, and distribution of Styrofoam packs in the State, and there is no going back on this resolve because we are more than committed.”

Cole enjoined market men and women in the state to stop selling and buying banned Styrofoam packs, and he read the riot act to traders who had converted road setbacks, walkways, medians, kerbs, and verges into sale points, stating that the agency would exhaust all lawful enforcement options to reduce hawking and street trading in the metropolis.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to reducing the number of environmental violations in the state to a bare minimum and seeking collaboration with sister agencies in carrying out its mandate when required and appropriate.

In a related development, the agency, with the assistance of LASTMA and LAWMA, expelled unlawful occupants on the Lagos-Badagry Motorway from the LASU second gate down to Okokomaiko. The enforcement action followed a petition from Lagos State University that called for LASTMA to work together to remove every obstructive truck and vehicle parked unlawfully on the axis.

In the same vein, LAWMA removed all the unwanted debris used by illegal occupants and miscreants that converted the road which leads to the State-owned Citadel of Knowledge to criminal hideouts.
