IMMIGRATION INTRODUCES DIGITAL PASSPORT RENEWAL FOR NIGERIANS ABROAD
The Nigeria Immigration Service will implement a contactless, phased passport renewal system in Canada on November 1, 2024
By enabling online passport renewals, this new method significantly reduces the need for Nigerians to physically visit NIS offices.
On Wednesday, a video was broadcast on the NIS’s official X account (previously Twitter) to announce the news. After the Canadian launch, the service will be made available in Nigeria and other countries by December 1.
On November 15, it will also be made available in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Italy.
“In its continued effort to serve the Nigerian public more efficiently and create a functional system that meets global standards, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a new contactless and issuance process starting from November 1st, 2024.
“Individuals will be able to apply to renew their international passports from the comfort of their homes without having to visit any NIS office,” it stated.
The NIS claims that the gradual implementation will improve accessibility for Nigerians around the world by enabling seamless passport renewals from any place without the need to visit NIS offices.
According to the NIS, Nigerians can renew their passports by accessing its online or downloading the NIS mobile app, which is accessible on Google Play, the App Store, and the Windows Store.
The NIS stated that although the software is not yet accessible on Google Play or the software Store, Nigerians in Canada are anticipated to download it and start using the service on these platforms from November 1.
