LAGOS OFFERS FREE HIV SCREENING, COUNSELLING SERVICES TO TRADE FAIR PARTICIPANTS
The AIDS Control Agency of the Lagos State Government has started offering free HIV screening and counseling to exhibitors and visitors to the Y2024 Trade Show in Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.
From November 1st to November 10th, 2024, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, formally opened the Y2024 Trade Fair, which will draw exhibitors from both domestic and foreign markets.
When Dr. Hamzat visited the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency’s (LSACS) booth at the Lagos pavilion, he praised the organization’s commitment to halting the spread of HIV in the state.
As the current administration understands the importance of keeping excellent health for increased productivity, he emphasized the state government’s commitment to providing citizens with sustainable healthcare service. However, in order to determine their HIV status and seek early medical attention if needed, the Deputy Governor encouraged all participants to take advantage of the free test. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, he also urged everyone to adopt positive health-seeking behaviors.
Chief Executive Officer of LSACA, Dr. Folakemi Animashaun explained that the free HIV screening initiative is part of efforts to promote public health, offering convenient access to HIV testing and support services in the state, adding that the state remains committed to improving access to health care services. She disclosed that the free screening and counselling exercise will run through the entire duration of the trade fair.
Dr. Animashaun averred that the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) has been instrumental in coordinating HIV/AIDS control programmes in the state, noting that the state has intensified efforts in upscaling its Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) Programmes, Public Awareness and Sensitisation programmes, Free HIV Testing and Counseling, Community Outreach Programmes and Youth-Focused Programmes while investing in research and data collection for a better understanding of the trends and demographics of HIV/AIDS in the state.
Animashaun added that in addition to increasing awareness of HIV, the screening exercise will also promote responsible behaviors to lessen the virus’s spread throughout the community. It will also give attendees and exhibitors access to important resources and support regarding HIV awareness and prevention.
As the government is committed to halting the virus’s spread and making sure that all citizens have access to the resources they need for prevention, testing, and treatment, she emphasized the state’s steadfast commitment to enhancing access to healthcare services, stressing the significance of stepped-up awareness campaigns and the expansion of HIV testing and counseling centers throughout the state.
While encouraging all participants of the Trade fair to take advantage of the free screening exercise, the Chief Executive officer advised all residents to also take responsibility for their health and well-being as getting tested for HIV is a crucial step in maintaining a healthy and productive life
“We must all take responsibility for our health and well-being, and getting tested for HIV is a crucial step in maintaining a healthy and productive life. I urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity and prioritise their health. I like to take this opportunity to encourage all participants to take advantage of the free screening exercise being offered”, she appealed.
However, Animashaun promised that the current administration will not back down from implementing plans aimed at delivering a sustainable healthcare system that supports the THEMES Plus Agenda.
