LAGOS GOVT URGES RESIDENTS TO EMBRACE GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL PRACTICES DURING YULETIDE
The Lagos State Government has called on all residents to adopt proper environmental sanitation practices during and after the Yuletide season to promote a sustainable environment.
This appeal was conveyed in a statement by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, who emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean environment and ensuring proper waste disposal during the festive period.
According to him, “The Yuletide season is a time for celebration, but it is also crucial that we prioritize environmental cleanliness; We encourage all residents to dispose of waste properly and avoid littering the streets, walkways, road medians, kerbs, open spaces, drainages and canals.”
Acknowledging the increased waste generation during Christmas and New Year celebrations, he urged residents to properly dispose of animal and livestock waste, sort and bag all waste, and place it at designated collection points for PSP operators to pick up.
He reassured residents that waste management officials will be active throughout the festive season to ensure timely waste collection. He also urged cooperation with waste collectors and encouraged reporting instances of delayed waste collection.
The Commissioner highlighted the readiness of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to promptly handle waste evacuation during the season. He advised residents to engage only PSP operators and avoid patronizing cart pushers.
Mr. Wahab affirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment and encouraged residents to report environmental issues or improper waste disposal via the LAWMA toll-free line at 0800-005-2962.
He noted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is dedicated to fostering a healthy population and cleaner environment, urging Lagosians to uphold a culture of cleanliness for a better quality of life.
“By maintaining a clean environment, we will ensure a healthier and more enjoyable festive season for all. Let’s work together to keep Lagos clean”, he said.
The Commissioner also reminded residents that the ban on street trading remains in effect, warning against selling livestock or other goods on roads, medians, walkways, parks, or gardens.
He urged traders to relocate their activities to designated markets to comply with the law and support the government’s efforts to maintain order and cleanliness across the state.
Mr. Wahab concluded by wishing all residents a joyful, environmentally friendly Christmas celebration and a prosperous New Year.
