MINIMUM WAGE: TEACHER SHORTAGE HITS PRIVATE SCHOOLS IN OYO
Private primary and secondary schools in oyo state, south-west nigeria, are experiencing a shortage of teachers.
A source indicated that the shortage is particularly noticeable in main cities and towns such as ogbomoso, oyo, saki, iseyin, eruwa, and other areas within the state.
Research disclosed that the shortage became evident at the start of the second term of the 2024/2025 academic session on monday, 6th january, 2025.
It was noted that hundreds of teachers in both private primary and secondary schools across the state did not resume at the start of the new term.
This is attributed to the oyo state government’s employment of some teachers and the implementation of the new minimum wage policy.
It is important to note that the state government, under the leadership of engineer seyi makinde, recently hired at least 5,600 teachers to fill vacant positions in public schools across the state.

Further investigation over the weekend revealed that the state government commenced distribution of appointment letters to the newly recruited basic school teachers on monday, 6th january, 2025.
The distribution took place at the local government universal basic education authorities (lgubeas) located in all local governments throughout the state.
Dr. nureni adereimi adeniran, chairman of the oyo state universal basic education board, recently addressed the issue and encouraged the new teachers to embrace innovation and modern methods in teaching.
Adeniran, who reiterated the board’s zero tolerance for examination malpractices, announced that the appointments of the new teachers officially took effect on january 1st, 2025.
However, he also mentioned that about 12 local governments are overstocked with teachers, while others face a shortage, and a re-distribution of teachers will be carried out to ensure fairness and equity.
Adeniran urged the newly appointed teachers to demonstrate patriotic dedication, integrity, and professionalism in carrying out their duties.
