EFCC CHAIR SLAMS NIGERIANS FOR CONDEMNING CORRUPTION BUT PROTECTING CORRUPT LEADERS
The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede, stated that while many Nigerians complain about corruption, they often back corrupt leaders in various ways when these leaders face prosecution.
During a visit by officials from the Centre for Crisis Communication, led by Chris Olukolade, in Abuja over the weekend, the EFCC chairman highlighted the inconsistency in public behavior, noting that although Nigerians criticize corruption, they tend to support and defend corrupt leaders when they are being prosecuted.
“Everybody is crying that Nigerians are corrupt, that the system is corrupt, that corruption is killing us and destroying our system, but when we investigate high profile cases and arraign people in court, the same people will carry placards and be supporting corrupt leaders.
“It doesn’t show that we are serious about this fight, the fight is supposed to be a collaborative effort,” he said.
Olukoyede emphasized that combating corruption requires cooperation between the government and the public, stressing that real progress depends on a shared dedication to integrity and accountability.
He pointed out that corruption continues to be the greatest barrier to the country’s development.
“One of the major problems in Nigeria which when tackled, will make under-development a thing of the past, is corruption and financial crimes,” he said.
