The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University branch, has announced plans to begin an indefinite strike on February 11 due to unresolved welfare issues.

The union made this announcement in a letter signed by its Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and Secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri, which was sent to the national body for approval.

According to the letter, the strike was a result of the Kaduna State Government’s failure to address the union’s concerns. These issues include unpaid salaries from May to September 2022, 60 percent of September 2017 salary, and other withheld payments.

Other grievances include the nonpayment of Earned Academic Allowance from 2015 to 2020, unpaid Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) allowances from 2016 to 2023, and the failure to remit pensions from 2009 to 2019.

Additionally, the lecturers pointed out the absence of promotion arrears from 2019 to 2023, as well as the non-payment of Group Life Insurance for deceased academic staff from 2020 to present.

The union recalled that they had met with Governor Uba Sani on August 17, 2024, to discuss these issues, and the governor had promised to settle the outstanding payments. The union then reminded the governor of his commitment in a letter dated August 20, 2024, through the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Mohammed Bello.

Efforts to resolve the matter continued with another appeal on October 28, 2024, urging for a swift resolution. On December 17, 2024, the governor met with the management and unions of tertiary institutions and assured that payment modalities would begin within three weeks.

However, after three weeks had passed without any payments, the union sent another reminder on January 17, 2025.

“We are writing to remind you that today, Tuesday, January 7, 2025, marks three weeks since the meeting was held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, and we are yet to receive any information on the payment modalities as promised by His Excellency.

“We are appealing for your prompt intervention to consolidate on the gains of the previous deliberations and agreement made, to forestall industrial dispute and crisis in KASU,” the letter said.

With no response from the government, the union said it had no option but to proceed on an indefinite strike to press for the resolution of the outstanding welfare issues.
