COURT COMMANDS ARREST OF VERYDARKMAN OVER DEFAMATION OF MERCY CHINWO

Read Time:1 Minute, 34 Second

The blogger Martins Vincent Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, has been arrested on a bench warrant issued by the Chief Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 6, Abuja, for “criminal defamation” of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo’s reputation.

In order for VeryDarkMan to respond to the criminal charges against him, the magistrate ordered the Nigeria Police Force and other law enforcement organizations to arrest him and bring him before the court.

After VeryDarkMan was summoned by the court on March 5, 2025, to appear before the judge, he failed to do so, and on Thursday, March 13, 2025, judge Emmanuel Iyanna issued the bench warrant.

Iyanna dismissed the appeal and requested that security agencies bring VeryDarkMan in court, despite Deji Adeyanju, his attorney, urging the magistrate to reconsider the bench warrant and to personally produce his client.

VDM’s claimed defamatory remarks on social media, accusing Chinwo of being involved in a contractual dispute and the alleged diversion of $345,000 connected to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, commonly known as Eezee Tee, were the basis for the bench warrant.

Chinwo provided the court with documentation to back up her assertions, such as emails and payment receipts, demonstrating that VDM’s accusations were not only wholly untrue but also defamatory and detrimental to her character and public image.

According to the complainant’s attorneys, led by Pelumi Olajengbesi of the Abuja-based legal Corridor legal company, the defendant’s acts violate Section 24 (1)(B) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention etc.) Act 2015 and Section 391 of the Penal Code.

Recall that in addition, Chinwo’s attorney brought VDM before the Federal Capital Territory’s High Court in Abuja, where they demanded N1.1 billion in damages from the blogger.

An injunction requiring VDM to remove, take back, and publicly apologize for any allegedly false and defamatory statements made against Chinwo and her brand was requested by the attorney.
