Olawole Sunday, a suspected online scammer, was taken into custody by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission agents on suspicion of buying bank account information from people in order to commit financial crimes.

Dele Oyewale, the head of the EFCC’s Media and Publicity division, said in a statement on Monday that Sunday’s fraudulent plot entailed enlisting young people to register several bank accounts.

Oyewale claimed that Sunday obtained their complete financial information, including their Automated Teller Machine cards, and gave them between N25,000 and N50,000 for each account.

According to him, the trouble started when Sunday reportedly exploited one Uyi Eghosa’s account details to swindle an unwary victim of N2 million while posing as a forex trader.

Oyewale said Eghosa was arrested and, during interrogation, claimed ignorance of the fraudulent use of his account.

He continued by saying that Eghosa informed investigators that he gave Sunday his ATM card and account information in return for N25,000.

He said, “Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested one Olawole Sunday, a suspected fraudster who specialised in buying bank accounts’ details from individuals with which he defrauds unsuspecting members of the public.

“Sunday’s modus operandi involved encouraging young people to open multiple bank accounts, pay them either N25,000 or N50,000 for each account and collect their bank details, including Automated Teller Machine cards.

“Sunday allegedly employed the account details of one Uyi Eghosa to defraud a petitioner of the sum of N2 million under the guise of trading in forex. The account owner, Eghosa, was arrested, and his disclosure that he was unaware that his account was used in defrauding members of the public led to Sunday’s arrest.”

Oyewale went on to say that he confessed to the crime when he was arrested on Sunday and would face charges as soon as the investigations were finished.
