CRIME: GROOM, FRIENDS ARRESTED OVER BRIDE’S DEATH IN JIGAWA
The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a groom and his friends for allegedly coercing the bride into non-consensual sexual activity, leading to her death.
According to the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, the incident occurred on April 26, 2025, at about 10 pm.
A statement made available to newsmen in Dutse, the state capital, on Sunday evening by the police spokesperson noted, “The groom, identified as Auwal Abdulwahab, 20, and his friends, Nura Basiru, 20, Muttaka Lawan, 20, and Hamisu Musa, 20, all from Tungo village, were arrested and taken into custody for discreet investigation.”
He revealed that when the incident happened, the police were alerted, and a team led by the Divisional Police Officer immediately rushed to the scene.
The command’s spokesperson explained that the bride’s death is believed to have resulted from the alleged non-consensual sexual activity, which her husband and his friends coerced her into.
The police have confirmed that the bride had reportedly disagreed with her husband on marital relations since their wedding.
Adam stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Abdullahi, has directed that the case be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Dutse for a thorough investigation.
“After the investigation is completed, all suspects will be prosecuted accordingly,” he added.
However, the Jigawa police have confirmed that the body of the deceased was evacuated to Gumel General Hospital for medical examination, where the doctor on call confirmed her death, adding that “the corpse was later released to her parents for burial.”
The statement added, “The suspects could face two charges under the relevant laws of the jurisdiction, including criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide. The police are determined to ensure justice is served in this case.”
The command has assured the public that it will take all necessary steps to ensure justice is served in this case and also urged parents to counsel their children on the importance of respecting their spouses.
“The groom and his friends are currently in police custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” SP Adam confirmed.
He also assured the public that the police will leave no stone unturned in investigating the case.
