UPDATE: MISSING STUDENT LEFT CAMPUS WITHOUT CLEARANCE – BABCOCK UNIVERSITY REVEALS
Babcock University, Ogun State, has stated that Oladipupo Siwajuola, a one-year Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board student reported missing, left the institution’s premises without proper clearance or adherence to established protocols.
On May 3, 2025, Mrs. Fijabi Oyindamola, mother of the student, raised alarm via a viral video on social media about her son’s disappearance.
In an official statement issued by the university on Monday, Babcock said, “Unverified reports indicated that Oladipupo Siwajuola emerged from his hiding place in Akute, in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria, a town very close to Lagos State where he previously attended secondary school.”
The statement, titled “Mother’s online sensational outbursts over ‘Missing son’: Babcock sets the record straight,” read, “The student’s exit from the University campus was neither approved nor known to the University at the time. In an unfortunate turn, the student’s mother took to social media to sensationalise the situation, falsely accusing Babcock University and its students of negligence and complicity.
“These public allegations were not only misleading but deeply regrettable. She was doing this while the University, rather than joining the needless engagement on social media, was busy galvanising efforts, urgently and assiduously, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies, ever-patriotic and dedicated Babcock student bodies and concerned citizens to ensure the safety and return of the student.”
The university added that, as of the time of the statement, the student’s mother had yet to inform them of his return.
However, reports on Sunday stated that Siwajulola had been found, the mother announced in another post on Facebook.
The Monday statement further read, “First and foremost, we are pleased to inform the public that certain reliable sources suggest the student in question has returned from his hiding place to her mother’s care. Unverified reports indicate that Oladipupo Siwajuola emerged from his hiding place in Akute in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria, a town very close to Lagos State where he previously attended secondary school.”
“However, Babcock University has not received any official confirmation or denial of this information from the NPF. Furthermore, the student’s mother has not contacted the University to confirm the situation.”
The statement emphasised that the institution is still awaiting the outcome of the full-scale investigation by the Nigeria Police Force into the circumstances surrounding Oladipupo’s disappearance and return.
“It is, however, important to note that from the University’s records, Oladipupo exited the University’s campus without authorisation and did not follow the approved procedures for leaving University premises,” it declared.
Babcock University also revealed that investigations showed the student’s roommates had previously raised concerns to his mother via WhatsApp, reporting unusual behaviours including the use of items perceived as fetish.
It continued, “They repeatedly raised concerns to his mother via WhatsApp about his strange behaviour, including the use of items perceived as fetish, like a ‘local sponge and black soap’ which she claimed were for treating skin conditions.”
Despite her explanations, the roommates reportedly felt uncomfortable due to the University’s strict policies on suspicious items.
“They also informed her of his debts, gambling, and other misconduct. She thanked them, asked them not to report him to the authorities, and sought their advice on handling him. Additionally, it is noted that she was aware of a threat he made to stab a roommate, Tobi Famuyiwa, for reporting his actions to her.”
According to the university, Oladipupo is now expected to appear before the Student Disciplinary Committee.
“For the above reasons, Oladipupo is going to appear before the Student Disciplinary Committee of the University, particularly to be given, as usual, the opportunity of a fair hearing, to clear himself of the misconduct allegedly perpetrated by him. In the same vein, any other alleged person (student or employee) indicted in the ongoing investigation will equally appear before the appropriate University committee.”
Further details from the statement outlined events leading up to the disappearance.
“After returning him to Babcock University on April 28 following his JAMB exam, she noticed he was withdrawn. She became suspicious when Oladipupo gave conflicting stories about the whereabouts of his phone, which turned out to have been sold. He used a friend’s device (Lampard Sowemimo’s) with his SIM card to maintain contact with her and later shared his banking details with Lampard to repay debts.
“Despite clear signs of misconduct, including gambling, selling his phone, and repeated dishonesty, his mother had earlier pleaded with his roommates not to report him to the University. This obstructed proper reporting procedures. When Tobi Famuyiwa eventually informed her of Oladipupo’s actions, Oladipupo threatened him. That night, Oladipupo left his dorm with a hoodie and backpack.
“His mother noticed unusual transactions in his bank account and withdrew the remaining funds, but some had already been used to pay debts. Communication between them continued via his laptop until April 30. On May 2, she officially reported the situation to the Student Development Office and University Security. Lampard was interrogated by University security on May 3,” the release concluded.
