‎In a major step toward building a more inclusive and fair society, the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Agency for Mass Education (LAGAME) have entered into a partnership aimed at expanding educational access for People with Disabilities (PWDs) throughout the state.

‎The collaboration reinforces the Lagos State Government’s dedication to addressing the needs of individuals with disabilities, helping them realize their full potential, build self-confidence, and play active roles in the state’s socio-economic development.

‎This partnership was formalized after a recent strategic meeting between LASODA’s General Manager, Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, and the Director of LAGAME, Mrs. Oluwakemi Kalesonwo.

‎The meeting marked a crucial moment in aligning efforts and rallying stakeholders around inclusive education and training initiatives for PWDs, positioning them as top priorities in Lagos State’s education agenda. It emphasized the need for a coordinated strategy to remove obstacles and create accessible learning and skill-building opportunities.

‎Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal reiterated LASODA’s strong commitment to enhancing the lives of PWDs, stressing that education is a powerful tool for personal and professional empowerment.

‎She emphasized that quality education is not just a privilege but a fundamental right that can lead to meaningful employment, greater independence, and improved overall quality of life for people with disabilities.

‎According to her, “The Lagos State Government has already made a public commitment to promoting inclusive education for students with disabilities, and this partnership represents a concrete action in support of that pledge. The significance of inclusive education for the comprehensive development and active participation of PWDs in society is widely recognized, both nationally and internationally”.

‎Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal emphasised that ensuring accessibility is paramount to addressing the unique needs of individuals across various disability clusters. This understanding aligns with the widely accepted definition of accessibility in education, which aims to provide equal access and opportunities for all students, regardless of their abilities.

‎“By  acknowledging the diverse needs arising from different types of disabilities, this partnership signals a commitment to developing tailored solutions that can effectively cater to a broad spectrum of learners”, she said.

‎Responding  to LASODA’s concerns and proposals, Mrs. Kalesonwo affirmed LAGAME’s commitment to collaborate in addressing the educational needs of PWDs. She assured that LAGAME is already engaged in efforts to ensure the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in their‎ various programmes.

‎Specific areas of support were highlighted, including the potential for setting aside admission quotas for PWDs, adapting existing curricula to be more inclusive, and providing access to assistive technology that can enhance the learning experience.
