‎The Niger State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure has expressed serious concern over widespread disregard for safety protocols by contractors working on ongoing construction projects across the state.

‎The committee highlighted repeated accidents and close calls at various project sites as clear indicators of poor safety practices.

‎During a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and contractors, Committee Chairman Abubakar Suleiman Gomna questioned the ministry’s effectiveness in ensuring compliance with safety standards.

‎Committee members, including Mohammed Haruna and Sani Umar, underscored the critical role of safety in construction, insisting that companies must have dedicated safety units and adhere strictly to regulations.

‎As a result, Mohammed Haruna moved a motion seconded by Isah Etsugaie mandating that any contractor found violating safety guidelines would face immediate suspension of their work.

‎The Permanent Secretary, Hassan Baba Etsu, assured the committee that the Ministry would prioritize citizens’ safety and enforce safety regulations strictly.

‎“Contractors will not receive payments without complying with safety protocols, prioritizing citizens’ safety. We also pledge continued cooperation with your Committee for best practices in infrastructural development, supporting the New Niger Agenda, “the Perm Sec stated.

‎The contractors also pledged to adhere to safety protocols, ensuring a safer working environment.
