Troops of the 3 Division/Operation Safe Haven have killed one bandit and rescued a kidnap victim in the forests of Plateau State.

Confirming the development in a statement released on Tuesday night, Major Samson Zhakom, spokesman for the Military Taskforce, said the operation was based on intelligence indicating that bandits were planning to attack communities in Kampani Zurak, Wase Local Government Area.

According to Zhakom, the troops engaged the bandits at their gathering point at Dutsen Zaki High Ground in Wase LGA.

He added that during the ensuing gunfire, one bandit was neutralised, while others fled, sustaining gunshot wounds.

“In the early hours of June 3, 2025, troops of 3 Division/Operation Safe Haven conducted an intelligence-driven operation along the borders of Plateau and Taraba States. The operation was prompted by a tip-off regarding bandit plans to attack communities in Kampani Zurak, Wase LGA of Plateau State.

“During the operation, troops encountered the criminals at their concentration area at Dutsen Zaki High Ground in Wase LGA. In the exchange of fire, one bandit was neutralised, while others fled with gunshot wounds.

He further disclosed that in a separate operation later that day, troops discovered a cache of arms and ammunition concealed by bandits in Pandam Forest, Qua’an Pan LGA.

The recovered items included one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, and 30 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

“The recovered weapon and ammunition are in the custody of troops for further action. Meanwhile, operations continue in the area to recover other arms and ammunition concealed by the criminals.

“These operational successes underscore the necessity of consistently engaging criminal elements in decisive combat and retrieving weapons from unauthorised individuals. Operation Safe Haven remains committed to protecting lives and property within its Joint Operations Area,” the statement added.

Additionally, troops rescued a kidnapped victim, Mr Auwalu Isa, aged 24, who had been abducted from Kampani Zurak. The rescued victim has been debriefed and reunited with his family. Follow-up operations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing bandits,” Zhakom said.
