The first Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) plant in the North-East has been inaugurated, highlighting the effectiveness of collaboration between public and private sectors in supporting the federal government’s ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has launched the inaugural Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) hub in the North-East region of Nigeria.

The minister emphasized that the recent development signifies the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in furthering the federal government’s ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative. He highlighted the project’s role in establishing new standards for energy accessibility and sustainability, particularly through the Greenville LNG facility in Yola. This location is significant for the North-East, a region long hindered by infrastructural deficits. The minister regarded the facility as a pivotal advancement, offering hope and opportunities not just for Adamawa State but for the entire region, asserting that Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources should be accessible to all areas of the country.

The spokesman for the President, Louis Ibah, stated that President Bola Tinubu has prioritized the utilization of Nigeria’s gas resources for the purposes of economic transformation, industrialization, and social development. Ekpo highlighted the LCNG model as a prime instance of this innovative approach.

The project aims to provide an integrated solution for powering vehicles and industrial equipment using both LNG and CNG, presenting a cleaner and more cost-effective alternative to traditional fuels. The initiative underscores the federal government’s commitment to fostering economic growth through the adoption of gas and positions natural gas as a foundational element of national energy security. The advanced technology employed in the LCNG facility establishes a new standard for energy accessibility and sustainability, contributing not only to energy provision but also to job creation, business development, and social stability through inclusive growth. Ekpo has urged further investment in the LCNG project, emphasizing the significant potential for development in underserved communities.

The project received gratitude from its supporters in Adamawa State, highlighting the provision of land and a suitable construction environment. It was emphasized that Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a more affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to petrol, aligning with the state government’s vision for cleaner energy. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, represented by Deputy Kaletapwa Farauta, acknowledged the necessity of federal support for the initiative, especially in light of the tangible effects of climate change on the region. Greenville Chairman Eddy Broeke announced a commitment of over $1 billion for investment in the country, expressing a desire to replicate similar projects across other states with government assistance.
