UNILAG STUDENT DROWNS WHILE PERFORMING BACKFLIP STUNT AT ELEKO BEACH
By Aishat Momoh. O.
A University of Lagos (UNILAG) undergraduate, Damilola Balogun, has drowned while attempting a backflip stunt at Eleko Beach, Lagos.
The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, September 18, 2025, though some accounts suggest it may have happened a day later. Balogun, a Faculty of Education student, had asked a friend to film him performing the stunt when a strong wave swept him away.
Despite immediate rescue efforts, he could not be saved. His body was later recovered on Saturday morning at Museyo Beach, Ibeju-Lekki, about two kilometres from where the accident took place, according to Dr. Farouk, who first shared the news on social media.
The incident has thrown the UNILAG community into mourning, with friends and colleagues taking to social media to pay tribute. One colleague, Doyin Doski, described him as vibrant and full of life, noting that he had recently been elected President of his faculty after previously serving as Vice President.
Confirming the development, the university’s Director of Communications, Mrs. Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, said Vice Chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola has extended condolences to the bereaved family.
“The Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the entire University community, commiserates with his family and prays that God grants them the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss,” she said.
