A tragedy struck Akaajime community in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State on Wednesday when a mother and her four children were discovered unconscious in their home, with one of the children confirmed dead.

Neighbours rushed the victims to a private hospital in Gboko, but a four-year-old boy was pronounced dead on arrival.

A family member, Mohivinze Terkura, said she narrowly escaped the tragedy after spending the night at her aunt’s house due to heavy rainfall. According to her, she returned home around 10 a.m. to find the door still locked from inside.

“When I forced the door open, I met my mother and siblings unconscious. I raised an alarm, and neighbours helped me rush them to the hospital. Unfortunately, my four-year-old brother died before we got there,” she recounted.

Terkura said she noticed a chemical-like smell resembling cooking gas inside the house but insisted her family neither owned a gas cooker nor used insecticides apart from mosquito nets.

One of the survivors, who later regained consciousness, said he woke up trying to prepare for school but was too weak to move. “I called my mother, but she did not respond. I later realised we were all unconscious until my sister returned in the morning,” he said.

The attending doctor, Dr Joshua Atime of Vawar Hospital, Gboko, confirmed that the patients were stabilised before being transferred to the General Hospital, Gboko.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Gboko LGA, Torseer Yina, said he had only read about the incident on social media and had yet to receive an official report. Efforts to reach the Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful
