RUSSIA POUNDS UKRAINE WITH MASSIVE STRIKES, KYIV PLUNGED INTO DARKNESS
Ukraine announced on Friday that Russia had initiated a “major assault” on the capital city of Kyiv, resulting in power outages as a government official cautioned that Moscow was also heavily targeting the national energy infrastructure.
“The nation’s capital is currently enduring an assault from enemy ballistic missiles and a substantial strike involving enemy drones,” the Ukrainian air force reported, urging residents of Kyiv to seek refuge in shelters.
Journalists from AFP in Kyiv reported hearing numerous intense explosions throughout the city and experienced power disruptions in various neighborhoods of the capital.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko indicated that Russian military forces had aimed at “vital infrastructure,” resulting in injuries to at least nine individuals, five of whom were subsequently hospitalized.
“The left bank of the capital is experiencing a loss of electricity. There are also significant issues regarding the water supply,” Klitschko stated via the Telegram messaging platform.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk remarked that Russian troops were “delivering a significant blow” to the energy grid.
“Energy personnel are implementing all necessary actions to mitigate the adverse impacts,” Grynchuk wrote on Facebook.
“Once safety conditions permit, energy specialists will commence assessment of the attack’s repercussions and restoration efforts,” she added.
Additionally, Russia targeted the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia with at least seven drone strikes, injuring a minimum of three individuals, as reported by Ivan Fedorov, the head of the regional military administration.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified aerial assaults on Ukrainian energy installations and railway systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked on Thursday that Moscow aimed to “instigate chaos” by attacking energy infrastructures and railways.
In retaliation, Ukraine has amplified its own drone and missile strikes directed at Russian territory, a strategy that Zelensky indicated was yielding “results” and driving up fuel prices within Russia.
