COURT FIXES OCTOBER 29 FOR POLICE CASE AGAINST SOWORE OVER #FREENNAMDIKANUNOW PROTEST

A judgment date has been set by the Federal High Court in Abuja for October 29, when it will hear a suit filed by the Nigeria Police Force against Omoyele Sowore and other conveners of the “#FreeNnamdiKanuNow” protest.

The case arises from an ex parte motion brought by the police in which an interim order was secured that restrains Sowore and co-respondents from staging demonstrations in specified high-security areas of Abuja. The order encompasses locations such as the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, the National Assembly complex, the Eagle Square and the headquarters of the police force.

In the ex parte motion, the police argued that public protests planned in support of Nnamdi Kanu’s release posed a potential threat to national security and public order. The respondents listed include Sowore, his media outfit, and other organisations alleged to have been involved in the planned demonstration.

The court had originally scheduled a hearing earlier this month to allow the respondents to show cause why the interim order should be set aside. However, proceedings were disrupted, and the matter could not proceed as the protest itself had reportedly affected court activities.

Now, with the new date fixed for October 29, the respondents will be expected to fully answer the motion on notice filed by the police and present their case. The hearing should determine whether the interim order will be sustained or vacated, and potentially set wider precedent regarding protest rights and court-ordered restraints in Nigeria.
