POLICE EXPLAIN ARREST OF SOWORE INSIDE COURT PREMISES

The Nigeria Police Force has explained why activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was arrested inside the Federal High Court premises in Abuja shortly after attending a session related to the trial of Nnamdi Kanu.

According to the Force, Sowore’s arrest was carried out to maintain law and order and prevent a possible breakdown of peace within the court environment. The police said credible intelligence had indicated that his presence at the court could trigger a disturbance, prompting swift action to avert chaos.

Sowore was taken into custody moments after leaving the courtroom, in full view of lawyers, journalists, and other observers. The development sparked outrage from human rights activists and legal practitioners, who described the arrest within a court environment as a violation of judicial sanctity and due process.

In response, police authorities insisted the operation was conducted within the bounds of the law and in accordance with internal directives. They maintained that the arrest was not politically motivated but part of efforts to ensure public order and security.

Sowore’s lawyers, however, condemned the arrest, saying it was unlawful and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. They argued that their client was neither served any official invitation nor informed of any offence prior to being taken away by armed officers.

The activist, who has been vocal in his criticism of government policies, was said to have been moved to the FCT Police Command for questioning. His legal team has vowed to challenge the action in court, describing it as an affront to democracy and the rule of law.

The arrest comes amid heightened tension surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s ongoing trial, which has continued to attract large crowds and strong reactions from supporters and security agencies alike.

As of press time, the police had yet to confirm whether any charges would be filed against Sowore.
