NYSC MEMBER KILLED IN ABUJA ROBBERY CROSSFIRE

The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abdulsamad Jamiu, during a security operation triggered by an armed robbery incident in Abuja.
Jamiu was killed in the early hours of April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate in Dei-Dei, Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, Lt. Olawuyi Odunola, said troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol when they responded to a distress call about a robbery in the area.
According to him, upon arrival, the soldiers came under fire from fleeing armed robbers, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire. During the encounter, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire and, despite efforts by the troops to secure the area and save lives, he died from his injuries.
Odunola described the incident as a tragic loss, noting that it had deeply affected personnel of the Guards Brigade. He added that the situation was tense as troops worked to repel the attackers and restore order.

He said the Commander of the Guards Brigade, along with officers and soldiers, had extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and others affected by the incident.
The Army spokesperson also confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, assuring that the findings will be made public.
He added that the remains of the deceased have been handed over to the appropriate authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.
Odunola reiterated the Guards Brigade’s commitment to protecting lives and property in the FCT and said operational procedures would be reviewed to improve civilian safety. He also urged residents to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies.
