OYO STATE GOVT DENIES REPORTS OF NEW ENTERTAINMENT TAX ON SOCIAL EVENTS

The Oyo State government has dismissed a viral social-media post claiming that new taxes had been introduced on weddings, burials and naming ceremonies in the state.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, described the report as “fake and mischievous,” warning that the misinformation campaign was aimed at discrediting the government. He pointed out that the alleged tax notice lacked key formal elements — such as a revenue code for payment, the signature of the Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Board and the official address of that office — signs that it was not an authentic government document.

The commissioner also voiced concern that such false claims may proliferate as the next elections approach, urging members of the media, bloggers and citizens alike to verify the authenticity of published information before accepting or spreading it.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and delivering people-oriented policies, emphasizing that no such tax has been approved or will be introduced without due legal process.
