Nigerian researchers can now access the European Union’s €100 billion Horizon Europe research and innovation fund following Nigeria’s official entry into the programme.

The development positions Nigeria as the first African country to fully associate with the EU’s flagship funding initiative, which supports cutting-edge research and technological advancement across member and partner countries.

According to the EU delegation in Nigeria, the agreement will enable Nigerian universities, research institutions, and innovators to compete for grants on equal terms with EU member states. This partnership is expected to boost Nigeria’s scientific capacity, foster collaboration with top European institutions, and drive innovations in areas such as climate change, health, digital transformation, and sustainable energy.

Officials said the collaboration aligns with the EU’s broader Global Gateway strategy and supports Nigeria’s national development priorities in science and innovation.

The Horizon Europe programme, which runs from 2021 to 2027, is the largest multinational research and innovation funding scheme in the world, with a budget exceeding €100 billion.

The agreement marks a major milestone in strengthening ties between Nigeria and the European Union, creating new opportunities for Nigerian scientists and entrepreneurs to contribute to global research breakthroughs.
