BREAKING: BUILDING COLLAPSES IN OYINGBO, LAGOS — SEVERAL FEARED TRAPPED

Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

A building collapsed in the early hours of Monday, October 27, at No. 47 Coastes Street, behind ECWA Church in Ebute Metta East, Oyingbo, Lagos, leaving several people feared trapped under the debris.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 12 a.m., throwing residents into panic as cries for help echoed through the night.

Rescue operations are ongoing, with about 10 ambulances and emergency teams already at the scene, evacuating victims and rushing them to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.

Local volunteers, identified as Awon Egbon Adugbo, were among the first responders, working tirelessly through the night to assist those trapped before government agencies arrived.

As of press time, no official casualty figures have been released, but residents say several people are still believed to be under the rubble. Officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Fire and Rescue Service are expected to provide updates later today.

This latest incident adds to the growing list of building collapses in Lagos, a recurring tragedy often linked to poor construction practices, weak regulation, and the use of substandard materials.

In recent months, multiple collapses have been recorded in the Ebute Metta and Yaba areas, prompting renewed calls for stricter oversight by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

Authorities are expected to provide official casualty updates once rescue efforts conclude, launch an investigation into the cause of the collapse, and conduct safety checks on surrounding buildings to prevent further incidents.

Meanwhile, residents in the area are urging the government to ensure stricter building compliance and accountability for developers found to have violated safety standards.

The story is still developing, and updates will follow as emergency agencies release more information from the scene.
