APONGBON BRIDGE REPAIRS CAUSE HOURS-LONG GRIDLOCK ON EKO BRIDGE – LASTMA
Agency Report

Traffic movement on Eko Bridge was severely disrupted on Tuesday following ongoing repair works on Apongbon Bridge by the Federal Ministry of Works, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, explaining that engineers working on the bridge spent between four and five hours at the site, resulting in heavy traffic congestion.
According to him, the situation eased only after LASTMA officials requested the removal of barriers mounted by the repair team.
“We asked them to remove the barrier that had been placed, and they have since left the area. We are now coping with the backlog,” Bakare-Oki said.
Commuters described the gridlock as exhausting, with traffic stretching across major connecting routes. A journalist, Mr Mike Ochomma, who was caught in the congestion, said the experience was “terrible.”
“I left Mushin at about 12:15 p.m. heading to the Island and got stuck in traffic near the National Stadium. I spent over three hours in the jam, and the congestion also affected motorists coming from Apapa,” he said.
A businesswoman, Mrs Maureen Obilor, also expressed frustration over the lack of prior notice about the repair works, saying she was forced to change her route.
“This is not right at all. Repairs should not be carried out during such a critical period of the season without informing the public. We would have made proper arrangements if we had known,” she said, adding that she diverted to Oyingbo Market before boarding a bus to the Island.
NAN reports that the gridlock extended as far back as Alaka Bus Stop, leaving motorists heading to Lagos Island via Eko Bridge stranded for several hours.
