Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti has reflected on his side’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting a key decision during their Round of 16 clash with Norway proved costly.
The Selecao were knocked out after a 2-1 defeat, with Erling Haaland scoring twice late in the match before Neymar Jr converted a penalty to reduce the deficit.
Speaking to ESPN, Ancelotti said the hydration break marked the turning point of the encounter, as he believed it disrupted Brazil’s momentum.
“I think we lost the World Cup during the hydration break against Norway,” Ancelotti said.
“Up until that moment, the team was in control. It’s true Norway had a lot of possession in their own half, just as they did against England. They controlled the game and could have won.
“That’s where my mistake may have been. I thought the team had lost control of the match when it actually hadn’t.
“I made a few changes to the lineup, and then we had the problem with Erling Haaland’s goal,” he added.
