The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally announced former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
This means Amaechi will serve as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the upcoming presidential contest.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to the statement, the decision followed broad consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women representatives, and stakeholders from all geopolitical zones.
It explained that Amaechi’s selection came after the conclusion of the ADC presidential primaries, where he emerged as runner-up, securing significant support from party members nationwide and reinforcing his standing as a prominent political figure.
The party described the Atiku–Amaechi pairing as a strategic alliance of two experienced statesmen aimed at addressing Nigeria’s challenges and advancing national development, economic growth, and security.
It highlighted Amaechi’s extensive public service record, noting his tenure as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, his two-term governorship of Rivers State, and his role as Minister of Transportation, where he spearheaded key rail and transport modernization projects.
The ADC added that his experience across legislative and executive roles, as well as his political influence in the South-South and across the country, would strengthen the joint ticket.
The statement further described the Atiku–Amaechi ticket as a national coalition that bridges regions and generations, combining governance experience with a shared vision for rebuilding trust in leadership and driving development.
It concluded by calling on party members, coalition partners, civil society groups, and Nigerians to support what it termed a historic effort to renew the nation and secure a better future.
