2027: FIVE GOMBE PARTIES PLEDGE PEACEFUL ELECTIONS

Five political parties in Gombe State have signed a peace accord, pledging to ensure peaceful and orderly conduct during the forthcoming by-election and the 2027 general elections.
The agreement was signed on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Gombe State Police Command during a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the command to promote peaceful political activities ahead of the elections.
Under the accord, the parties committed to conducting campaigns in line with the law and avoiding violence, thuggery, intimidation, destruction of property and other acts capable of disrupting the electoral process.
Presenting the terms of the agreement, the State Legal Officer of the Gombe Police Command, CSP Thomas Umeadi, said the parties agreed to conduct their campaigns peacefully and democratically before, during and after the 2027 general elections.
The parties also pledged to comply with the Electoral Act 2026 and other relevant laws, while giving at least 48 hours’ notice before organising rallies, processions or political meetings.
They further accepted responsibility for the conduct of their supporters and agents and agreed to avoid hate speech, incitement, fake news and campaigns based on ethnic, religious or regional sentiments.
The accord also requires parties to channel electoral grievances through lawful means and cooperate with security agencies and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner of Police, Gombe State Command, CP Umar Chuso, warned political parties, candidates and supporters against acts capable of threatening the peace.
Chuso assured stakeholders of the neutrality of the police during the electoral process and urged anyone with complaints to document and submit them through the appropriate channels.
Representatives of the participating parties and civil society organisations also called for fairness, transparency, justice and equal treatment of all political actors to ensure credible and peaceful elections in the state.
