The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has described as a planned propaganda stunt a viral video showing a man using what appeared to be a machete to destroy campaign posters bearing the images of President Bola Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

The video, which also carried the inscription “Tinubu Must Go,” showed the man tearing down several posters displayed on a wall.

Reacting to the footage on Friday via X, Keyamo alleged that opposition elements sponsored the act to create the impression that President Tinubu had lost public support ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The minister argued that the deliberate recording and circulation of the incident indicated that it was intended to promote a particular political narrative.

He said, “Here is a sponsored thug of the opposition brandishing a weapon, destroying the posters of the ruling party somewhere in the country. It is planned as a propaganda stunt because someone deliberately set a camera to record and circulate it.”

Keyamo further alleged that similar incidents had been staged in other parts of the country and subsequently portrayed as evidence of public rejection of the President.

He also criticised what he described as inconsistent reactions to incidents involving campaign posters belonging to opposing political parties.

According to him, a separate incident occurred in Lagos the previous week, where two or three people were allegedly seen using Tinubu’s posters to cover those of an opposition party. While describing that action as unacceptable, he claimed some television programmes and blogs labelled the individuals as supporters of the ruling party and used the incident to raise concerns about intimidation and democracy.

Keyamo stressed that his comments should not be interpreted as a call for retaliation by supporters of the All Progressives Congress.

“This is not a call on the teeming APC supporters to retaliate in any form, but this should prick the conscience of all men of goodwill,” he said.

He further alleged that opposition parties were seeking to portray the ruling party negatively ahead of the 2027 elections.

Keyamo also referred to recent bye-elections, claiming that opposition parties had suffered defeats in elections across five regions of the country, and expressed his expectation of a similar outcome in the 2027 presidential election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027.
