2027: KWARA NDC URGES VOTERS TO REJECT GODFATHERISM AND POLITICAL CRIMINALITY

The Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged residents to reject godfatherism, imposition of candidates and what it described as ineffective leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement released on Saturday by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Ibraheem Gbagba, the NDC said Kwara was at a crucial political crossroads and called on voters to place emphasis on competence, credibility and integrity rather than political connections.
The party noted that Kwarans had continued to face challenges including poor governance, unemployment, inadequate infrastructure and limited economic opportunities, stating that the 2019 “O To Ge” movement demonstrated the people’s demand for political transformation.
According to the statement, the experience of the past few years has shown that changing political parties alone does not guarantee good governance.
For decades, the people of Kwara State have endured poor governance, underdevelopment, unemployment, inadequate infrastructure and a lack of opportunities.
“In response to these challenges, Kwarans embraced the historic ‘O To Ge’ movement and voted for change, believing that a new administration would bring the desired transformation and prosperity,” the statement said.
The NDC, however, argued that the state’s challenges require leaders with proven competence, character, capacity and compassion.
While the change of government represented the people’s desire for a better future, it has become evident that merely changing political parties is not enough.”
“The true solution lies in electing leaders with competence, character, capacity, compassion, and a clear understanding of governance and the needs of the people.”
Today, Kwara State stands at another historic crossroads. The Nigeria Democratic Congress has provided Kwarans with a credible alternative by presenting candidates who possess the experience, integrity, vision and commitment required to move the state forward. These candidates emerged through democratic processes and enjoy the support and confidence of their respective communities,” the statement stated.
The NDC called on residents to reject what it described as anti-democratic political practices ahead of the elections.
We therefore urge Kwarans to reject godfatherism and political domination, imposition of candidates against the wishes of the people, incompetence and poor leadership, politics of personal interest over public service, and the recycling of failed politicians who have contributed to the challenges facing our state,” the statement read.
The party further argued that political power should belong to the electorate rather than a privileged few.
Highlighting its vision for the state, the NDC said it was committed to building a government that prioritises youth empowerment, agriculture, education, healthcare, business growth and prudent management of public resources.
The NDC is determined to build a Kwara State where governance works for everyone; where youths are empowered, farmers are supported, businesses thrive, education is strengthened, healthcare is accessible, and public resources are managed with transparency and accountability,” the statement said.
The party also said it enjoys the support and guidance of national political figures, including Senator Seriake Dickson, Mr Peter Obi and Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, whom it described as respected democrats committed to promoting people-centred governance.
It appealed to youths, women, traditional institutions, professionals, artisans, traders, students and community leaders across the state to support its candidates in the 2027 elections.
“Let us stand together and support all NDC candidates across the state. Let us move Kwara from unfulfilled promises to sustainable development. Let us reject political criminality, incompetence and anti-people policies. Let us choose credible leadership and a brighter future for generations yet unborn. Kwara must not return to square one. The time for responsible leadership is now,” the statement said.
