2027: TINUBU SAYS OPPONENTS MUST EARN VICTORY THROUGH FAIR CONTEST

President Bola Tinubu has declared that he will vigorously defend his mandate in the 2027 general election, insisting he will not make it easy for political opponents seeking to unseat him.

Speaking on Tuesday while receiving members of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu said political competition is part of democracy and that he was prepared to contest fairly until the end.

The President stressed that while his opponents were free to challenge him, he would not surrender without a fight.

Tinubu also defended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), dismissing allegations of bias against the electoral body. He maintained that the commission had remained neutral and suggested that critics were driven more by internal political uncertainties than by any actions of the electoral umpire.

Highlighting his administration’s performance, Tinubu said the economic reforms implemented over the past three years were beginning to produce positive results, with improvements gradually becoming evident.

He cited the uninterrupted academic calendar in public universities as one of the achievements of his administration, noting that the absence of strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had brought stability to the education sector.

The President acknowledged inheriting both the assets and liabilities of the previous administration but said his government had succeeded in stabilising the economy and laid the foundation for future prosperity.

On the issue of returning mission schools to their original owners, Tinubu recalled restoring such schools to the Catholic Church during his tenure as governor of Lagos State. However, he explained that the responsibility now rests with state governments and urged the bishops to engage governors on the matter.

Addressing national security and unity, Tinubu described Nigeria’s challenges as longstanding issues that require collective effort to overcome. He urged citizens to remain committed to building a united, stable and prosperous nation for future generations.

The Catholic bishops, led by Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, concluded their visit to the Presidential Villa shortly after 5:00 p.m. local time.
