BEES STING PASSENGERS TO DEATH AFTER ROAD CRASH
Agency Report
Six passengers have lost their lives after being stung to death by bees.
When the bus they were riding in in Nicaragua overturned down the road, bees swarmed the occupants.
After the collision, the bus allegedly slid into a beehive.
Authorities claimed Santos Herrera, 22, was driving the El Caracol-La Rica route that spans the northern communities of Jinotega and San SebastiƔn de Yali when he encountered mechanical problems and lost control of the school bus in the municipality of San SebastiƔn de Yali on Monday.
According to the Daily Mail UK, the bus was involved in a collision that sent it plunging into a 160-foot-deep slope where the beehives were.
The impact of the crash led the bus to split apart many wooden boxes and allowed the swarm of African bees to leave the hives where they made honey.
Health officials say the venomous bees attacked 45 of the 60 passengers and Herrera.
Residents in the region attempted to rescue the stranded passengers but gave up due to the bees’ presence.
The fatalities were named as Eneyda Torrez, 47, and Andrea Carolina Garca, her daughter, who passed away at a nearby hospital.
Kenia Soza, 19, Dilcia Amparo, 32, Santos CalderĆ³n, 38, and Reyna Olivas, 84, were also killed in the tragedy.
At least 14 passengers, including Justin Rivas, 4, and Alma Rivas, a pregnant woman, were treated at a hospital in Jinotega as well as a clinic in San SebastiƔn de Yal.
The transportation division of the National Police opened an investigation into the collision.
