BEAR ATTACKS FOREIGN TOURIST IN ITALY
Agency Report
A foreign visitor was attacked by a bear in northern Italy on Tuesday and was subsequently transported to the hospital, according to the local government.
The AGI news agency reported that the fatality was a 43-year-old French tourist who had been out running.
It said there was no threat to his life.
“This morning a foreign tourist was attacked by a bear in Naroncolo, in the municipality of Dro,” just north of Lake Garda, according to a statement from the province of the city of Trento.
“The man was helped by medics and airlifted to the Santa Chiara hospital in Trento with injuries to his limbs.”
Forestry officials are investigating, the province said.
There are around 100 bears in the wider region of Trentino, according to provincial authorities.
A bear attack on a woodland trail in Trentino in April 2023 claimed the life of a runner, sparking a discussion about the risks associated with the animals that were reintroduced in the area between 1996 and 2004.
Just fifty bears were authorized to be brought under that plan, but in recent years, their numbers have increased.
After the event, the female bear that was charged with killing the jogger—whom activists claimed was innocent—was taken away from her cubs and placed in a cage.
Provincial authorities declared in May that the bear, known as JJ4, will be moved to a shelter close to the Black Forest in Germany later this year, following repeated pleas from animal rights campaigners.
