KEBBI: WINDSTORM COLLAPSES TWO 330KV TRANSMISSION TOWERS
By: Motunrayo Aniwura
At Galadima Village in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, two 330KV transmission towers along the Kainji, Birnin Kebbi line collapsed on Wednesday night after a strong windstorm.
The incident happened amid a strong storm that destroyed houses and interrupted daily life in the impacted areas, raising questions about the dependability of the area’s electricity system.
According to Malam Umar Galadima, a resident, the transmission towers’ deteriorating condition made them incapable of withstanding severe weather.
“These materials are not strong enough to withstand this kind of wind. We need to introduce modern ways of transmitting electricity. To be precise, all these electrical towers are outdated. They need to be replaced, they’ve outlived their time,” he said.

“This is really bad for us. How long are we going to wait? This situation is becoming unbearable,” Malam Umar added, expressing the frustration and concern shared by many in the area.
The destroyed towers are a part of the vital high-voltage network that connects the Birnin Kebbi Substation, a crucial section of Nigeria’s national grid, to the Kainji Hydropower Plant.
The electrical supply in Kebbi and the neighboring states is probably going to be disrupted by their collapse.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, or TCN, has not released an official statement at the time this article was filed.
