DOG MEAT TRADE SCARE IN KENYA AS RESIDENTS APPREHEND SUSPECTS

BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
Residents of Embu may be unknowingly ingesting dog meat following the discovery of a canine carcass and two sharp knives in the possession of three traders on Sunday. Outraged inhabitants of Majengo Estate in Embu town apprehended unscrupulous merchants believed to be involved in the illicit dog meat trade, recovering both the carcass and the knives.
The inhabitants reported that they had observed the individuals transporting an unusual-looking load and confronted them to halt. The individuals disregarded the command, discarded a burlap sack, and escaped, with inhabitants in fervent pursuit.
When the bag was opened, it was found to contain the dog carcass and slaughter tools.
The residents immediately informed public health officers, who collaborated with police to dispose of the carcass.
As per Embu County Health Executive Jamal Runyenjes, the existence of the carcass and butchering equipment indicated a potential effort to integrate dog meat into the local food distribution network, possibly aimed at unsuspecting community members. Mr. Runyenjes stated that the individuals involved, who are well recognized, are being actively sought. “We have already issued a warning regarding the future activities of the suspects who are still at large,” remarked Mr. Runyenjes. He cautioned that the county’s public health monitoring team remains alert and will not permit the trade of dog meat within the area.
Mr Runyenjes thanked residents for cooperating with health officers to discourage illegal meat trade.
“Residents did a good job and we are happy. Let them keep up the spirit,” he said.
Certain inhabitants believe that canine flesh is being utilized to produce mutura (African sausage) sold in the streets of Embu town and its neighboring regions. “It is highly probable that we have been unknowingly consuming dog meat in this locality, and this issue requires comprehensive examination,” stated one resident.
They further articulated concerns regarding potential disease outbreaks should this trade persist. “Our well-being is jeopardized, and this illicit commerce must be terminated,” another resident cautioned.
