ABIA POLICE ARREST MAN OVER ALLEGED BRUTAL ABUSE OF CHILD

The Abia State Police Command has acknowledged a viral video circulating on social media showing a 13-year-old boy allegedly tied with a rope, severely flogged, injured, stripped naked and left under the scorching sun.
Following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, operatives of the Abayi Divisional Police Headquarters arrested Mr Uzoma Uwaeme, a resident of Nwokocha Street, off Udeabara Road, Aba, who was identified as the father of the victim and allegedly responsible for the abuse.
The Command said the boy’s mother had allegedly left him in the care of his father, who had since remarried.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation, while the suspect remains in police custody. The victim has received medical treatment, is in stable condition and is currently under police protective custody.
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, condemned the incident, describing the alleged abuse as inhumane, barbaric and a gross violation of the child’s rights.
Afolabi reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance for child abuse and domestic violence, assuring the public that the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report cases of child abuse, domestic violence and other criminal activities to the nearest police station or through its dedicated communication lines.
The Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights, dignity and well-being of residents, particularly vulnerable members of society.
