Operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a 26-year-old man, Ifiok Owoidem, over his alleged involvement in armed robbery incidents in Uyo and surrounding communities.

The suspect was apprehended at a hotel hideout in Ifa Atai, Uyo, following an intelligence report, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John.

Items recovered during the operation include two locally made pistols, one expended cartridge, two machetes and bottles containing substances suspected to be charms.

In the statement, the police said the operation took place at about 7 p.m. on October 19, 2026, after operatives received credible information about suspected armed robbers allegedly terrorising residents of Ifa Atai and neighbouring communities.

Acting on the intelligence, the operatives reportedly moved to the identified hotel, where the suspects were allegedly hiding and smoking substances suspected to be hard drugs.

The operation led to Owoidem’s arrest, while another suspect reportedly escaped and is currently being sought by the police.

The police identified Owoidem as an indigene of Okon Ikot Essien Village in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling crime through intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention, strategic deployment of personnel and sustained collaboration with members of the public.
