Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has reached the final of the Japan Open after battling past fellow Spaniard Jaume Munar 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in a hard-fought semi-final in Tokyo on Monday.
The world No. 3 overcame a difficult opening set and a spirited challenge from the 49th-ranked Munar to complete the comeback in two hours and 31 minutes.
Alcaraz struggled with unforced errors early in the contest, particularly towards the end of the first set, while Munar remained composed to capitalise on his opponent’s mistakes. The Spaniard also recorded four double faults in the opening set.
However, Alcaraz responded strongly in the second set, using powerful serves, aggressive returns and precise forehands to keep Munar under constant pressure.
He also mixed his attacking game with well-timed drop shots and fast volleys, repeatedly forcing Munar to cover the baseline.
Alcaraz broke Munar’s serve in the first, third and ninth games of the second set as he regained control of the match and levelled the contest.
The defending champion then produced a dominant display in the deciding set, pulling away from his compatriot to seal victory 6-1 and book his place in the final.
Alcaraz will face either Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka or Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot in the final, with the two players scheduled to meet in the other semi-final later on Monday.
