ASUU: PLATEAU VARSITY LECTURERS TO RESUME ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Plateau State University chapter, has suspended its indefinite strike following an agreement reached with the Plateau State Government on the union’s six-point charter of demands.

The decision was taken on Tuesday during an Emergency Congress Meeting held by the union in Jos, the Plateau State capital, where members reviewed the issues that led to the declaration of the strike on August 26, 2026.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson of the university’s ASUU chapter, Dr Vincent Choji, and the Secretary, Dr Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, the union said the negotiation teams of the state government and the union had reached a “reasonable conclusion” on the outstanding demands.

Among the agreements reached are the commencement of the Contributory Pension Scheme, full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria/ASUU Agreement and payment of the corresponding arrears with effect from January 2026.

Other areas of agreement include the provision of safe and secure staff quarters, construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence and an end to the intimidation of union leaders.

The parties also agreed on the payment of 22 months’ arrears arising from the 25 per cent and 35 per cent wage awards.

The government’s negotiating team was led by the Head of Service, Mr Steven Pam Gadong, while the ASUU team was headed by the Zonal Coordinator, Prof Aku Timothy Namo. The meeting was held at the Conference Hall of the Head of Service.

Following the agreement, the Congress resolved to suspend the industrial action with effect from midnight on September 16, 2026.

“By this development, members of the union are hereby directed to resume all academic activities. The union appreciates the public for their understanding and support,” the statement said.

ASUU-PLASU had on August 26 declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike over what it described as the failure of the university administration to satisfactorily address its six-point charter of demands.

The industrial action followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on August 11.
