The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a 68-year-old man and his 36-year-old son for allegedly possessing four single-barrel firearms without lawful authorisation.
The suspects, identified as Tibi Friday and Oyabrade Tibi, were apprehended during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Musa Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to the statement, officers attached to the Anti-Vice Unit intercepted the suspects at about 10:30 a.m. on July 6 while they were travelling in a commercial tricycle to Abua in neighbouring Rivers State.
During the search, police reportedly recovered four single-barrel guns concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks in what investigators believe was an attempt to evade detection.
“The Bayelsa State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Iyamah Daniel Edebor, has recorded another significant operational breakthrough with the arrest of two suspects in possession of four single-barrel guns,” the statement said.
The police said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yenagoa for a thorough investigation to determine the source of the firearms and identify any other persons who may be connected to the alleged offence.
The command added that preliminary investigations are ongoing.
It reaffirmed its commitment to combating the proliferation of illegal firearms and other violent crimes across the state and urged residents to continue providing credible and timely information to support ongoing security operations.
