Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital by ambulance after collapsing at the club’s Sabener Strasse headquarters on Friday.

The 40-year-old Belgian has been battling a viral infection over the past week and was watching a training session involving Bayern’s second team when the incident occurred.

Kompany had earlier held a press conference ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga clash with Freiburg on Sunday.

The German club confirmed that the coach would undergo a thorough medical examination and remain under medical care, adding that his coaching staff would oversee training and match preparations until further notice.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” the club’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, said in a statement.

Eberl added that Kompany would receive the necessary medical care and support, as well as sufficient time to recover.

He also expressed confidence in the coaching team taking over the manager’s duties and wished Kompany a speedy recovery on behalf of the club.

The viral infection had previously forced Kompany to cut short his media duties following Bayern’s 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig last Saturday. He also missed training sessions on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the club’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

His assistants, Aaron Danks and Rene Maric, oversaw most of Bayern’s preparations for the Arsenal encounter, including pre-match media duties.

Kompany returned to the touchline for the match after being deemed fit enough to lead the team. He also conducted the side’s activation training on Wednesday afternoon.

After the match, the coach spoke about the illness in an interview with German newspaper Bild.

“As a coach, you always want to do everything and accomplish what you can,” he said. “I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body, so at some point it just said: Stop now!”

Kompany has also been managing a hip injury that has affected his mobility. During Bayern’s matches against Leipzig and Arsenal, he spent much of the time seated on the substitutes’ bench, making only occasional visits to his technical area.

Further details about his condition are expected as the club provides updates.
