Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence over his reported dispute with national team coach Jorge Jesus, issuing a lengthy statement on Tuesday explaining the events that led to the disagreement.

The 41-year-old forward left Portugal’s training camp ahead of the match against Denmark after being left out of the team’s previous game against Norway.

In his statement, Ronaldo said he decided to speak directly about the situation after promising to explain the latest developments surrounding his future with the national team.

Ronaldo revealed that after the 2026 World Cup, he had prepared a farewell message for the Portuguese public but reconsidered his decision to retire after the president of the Portuguese Football Federation asked him to continue representing the country.

He said the federation president subsequently sought his opinion on the appointment of Jorge Jesus as the new national team coach.

“I answered the president of the federation that, in my opinion, he would be the ideal choice,” Ronaldo said, adding that he was genuinely pleased when Jesus was appointed.

According to Ronaldo, Jesus later contacted him and requested a meeting. During their meeting at the City of Football, the coach told him that he was central to his plans and would feature prominently in the team’s upcoming matches.

Ronaldo said Jesus initially suggested that he skip the away matches against Norway and Denmark, play the first game and remain in Portugal before returning for the match at the Estádio do Dragão.

The Portugal captain said he rejected the proposal because he believed remaining behind would set the wrong example, despite retaining his captaincy.

Ronaldo said Jesus eventually agreed with his position.

He also revealed that the meeting was attended by Simo Coutinho, Al-Nassr’s sporting director, who he said had been involved in the coach’s appointment at the Saudi club.

Ronaldo added that Jesus later visited him at his home in Lisbon before the training camp, where they discussed his role and agreed on the same arrangements.

He said he subsequently played at the Estádio José Alvalade and accepted being substituted without causing any problems, even personally handing the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes.

However, Ronaldo said the situation changed before the match against Norway.

According to him, an assistant coach approached him during lunch and said Jesus wanted to speak with him. Ronaldo said the coach then asked whether he was prepared to play 30 minutes, despite the previous plan being for him to play only in the later match at the Dragão.

Ronaldo said he agreed to the request but was left frustrated after warming up throughout the second half without being introduced.

“The coach broke his promise,” Ronaldo said.

He acknowledged that he made a mistake by failing to greet the supporters after the match, explaining that he was frustrated and wanted to leave the situation behind.

“I apologise to the Portuguese people who supported us so passionately there,” he said, also apologising to the fans who had travelled to watch him.

Ronaldo said he, Jesus and Coutinho later held a lengthy and frank meeting to resolve the dispute.

According to the Portugal captain, they agreed that Jesus would publicly clarify what had happened during his next press conference.

Ronaldo said the coach was expected to acknowledge that he had personally proposed the initial plan, that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time and that leaving him only to warm up without entering the match had been a mistake.

He said they ended the meeting with Jesus asking him for a hug and promising that the matter would be addressed publicly.

However, Ronaldo claimed that the coach’s subsequent conduct was completely different from what had been agreed privately.

He said he was confronted with what he considered unjustified aggression and an attitude that had not been displayed during their previous private discussions.

Ronaldo also reproduced notes from the statement he said had been prepared for Jesus to use during his press conference.

In the notes, Jesus acknowledged that he had personally proposed Ronaldo’s plan for the international window and that the forward had accepted it without questioning his decisions.

The coach also reportedly admitted that although the Norway match was not initially part of the plan, he later believed Ronaldo was physically ready to play.

Jesus was quoted as saying that he made a mistake by asking a player of Ronaldo’s stature to warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch.

He also reiterated his desire for Ronaldo to remain part of the Portugal squad.

The coach further dismissed concerns over Ronaldo’s failure to salute supporters after the Norway match, describing it as a moment of frustration rather than evidence of a lack of affection for Portugal.

Ronaldo’s statement has now provided his detailed account of the events surrounding the dispute and his decision to leave the national team camp.
