Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has been given another opportunity to revive the club’s struggling campaign, with the under-pressure manager set to remain in charge for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.

The decision comes despite United’s humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, which intensified calls for Carrick’s dismissal.

According to Sky Sports, the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, and chief executive, Omar Berrada, met at the Carrington training ground on Monday to discuss the manager’s future. The club had reportedly been considering possible replacements.

However, Carrick took charge of training on Tuesday, with the decision made to give him at least one more game to improve the team’s fortunes.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann have reportedly emerged as potential candidates should Manchester United decide to sack Carrick.

United will travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday seeking to end an eight-match winless run across all competitions. The 13-time Premier League champions are currently just one point and two places above the relegation zone.

Following the Chelsea encounter, United will face Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 3, before taking on Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, November 8.

Despite the team’s poor performances, some supporters at Old Trafford showed their backing for Carrick after the Bournemouth defeat, before directing their frustration towards the players.

Carrick also faces a decision over captain Bruno Fernandes, whom he dropped for the Bournemouth match after the Portuguese midfielder criticised the coaching staff’s tactics following United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.

Meanwhile, Chelsea head into the weekend fixture in fifth place, six points ahead of United after eight matches.

Carrick was initially appointed United manager in January 2026 following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal. He enjoyed an impressive spell, winning 12 of his 17 matches and guiding the club to a third-place finish in the Premier League, securing a return to the Champions League.

His performances earned him a permanent appointment on May 22, 2026.

Former United midfielder Gary Neville expressed surprise at the decision to retain Carrick, admitting he had expected the Bournemouth defeat to mark the end of his tenure.

Neville, however, welcomed the decision, saying he hoped Carrick could restore the players’ confidence and commitment in the coming weeks.

Sky Sports News reporter Rob Dorsett, meanwhile, suggested that the decision could merely delay Carrick’s eventual dismissal, arguing that the circumstances surrounding the team and the manager remained difficult.

Carrick will now face mounting pressure to deliver an improved performance against Chelsea as he attempts to keep Manchester United’s season from slipping further into crisis.
