Many families and businesses around the country are struggling because the electricity supply is getting worse, and the ongoing heatwave is making things even harder.

People in states like Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, Enugu, Benue, Oyo, Akwa-Ibom, Taraba, Lagos, and Ogun are facing long periods without power every week.
Because of this, many have stopped relying on the public electricity grid and are now using generators or solar power to keep their homes and businesses running.

Those who talked to our reporters said the lack of electricity is making it really hard to do daily tasks during the day.

Experts in energy say the increasing power cuts show bigger problems in the electricity system.

For millions of Nigerians struggling with rising living costs, the consequences are immediate as many grapple with business closures, food spoilage, rising energy costs and growing dependence on alternative power sources.

In Kano, residents of Unguwa Uku and Hotoro Dan Marke told the press that electricity supply had dropped drastically in the past month.

These include not enough gas for power plants, poor electricity transmission networks, and a long–term lack of investment throughout the whole electricity system.

A resident, Ahmad Ibrahim, said households received electricity for barely one hour.

He noted that even the one hour came at night.

“We hardly get electricity for more than one hour. Sometimes it may last two hours, but most times it comes late at night,” he said.

Another resident, Habibu Abdullahi, said the persistent blackout forced many households to seek alternative energy solutions.

He explained that while some households switched to solar, others totally disconnected from the public electric source.

“I cannot even count the number of houses that have installed solar systems because of the outage. Many people have already lost hope in public electricity supply,” he said.

In Sokoto, residents reported an even severe situation.

Communities including Mabera, Tamaje, Old Airport, Sahara, Emir Yahya and Tudun Wada said electricity supply had fallen below one hour daily.

A resident of Mabera, Musa Abdullahi, said the blackout worsened hardship during the Ramadan period.

“Because of the heat and fasting, people now depend on neighbours who have solar power to buy ice blocks or cold water,” he said.

Residents also complained that even communities classified under the Band A electricity tariff category, which should receive at least 20 hours of electricity daily, were receiving far less.

In Enugu State, where many consumers recently migrated to the expensive Band A electricity tariff, residents said electricity supply remained far below expectations.

A resident of Emene, Chinedu Okafor, said households were paying significantly higher tariffs despite receiving between four and 10 hours of electricity daily.

“How can people pay the highest tariff when electricity comes for only four hours?” he asked.

A small business owner in Nsukka, Amaka Nwosu, said the rising cost of running generators had crippled productivity.

“The cost of running generators is killing our business. Production has slowed and expenses keep rising,” she said.

In Makurdi, Benue State, residents said prolonged outages had forced businesses to shut down.

A resident of Adeke area, Attah, said unreliable electricity supply destroyed his wife’s frozen food business.

“My wife sells frozen meats but the business collapsed because the electricity supply became too unreliable,” he said.

Also lamenting, Madam Debby, a resident of George Akume Road, decried the epileptic power supply in her area.

According to her, the area hardly enjoys power supply even when other areas in the capital city used to have steady power supply.

“Before now, our area had not been enjoying power supply, we only have power for like two hours hours in two or three days.

“But since January, I doubt if we have had power supply for three hours. And the population along this area keeps increasing because of the road.

“Several shops have closed down and the people relocated to other areas like high level, and Wadatta area. But I learned that most of the people who relocated are complaining of epileptic power supply in those areas now,” Madam Debby said.

In Akwa Ibom State, residents say electricity supply has remained erratic and inconsistent, with some communities receiving less than three hours of electricity daily.

Another resident of Aka Etinan, Miss Ekaete Akpan, told the press that the irregular power supply severely affected small businesses in the area.

“The electricity supply here in Aka Etinan is very inconsistent. Even when it comes, it hardly lasts up to three hours,” she said.

According to her, electricity is often supplied during early morning hours when most businesses are closed.

“Normally, they bring it around 3am and by 6 or 7am it is taken away again. After that you may not see electricity again until late in the night. It almost looks like the supply is timed,” Akpan said.

She added that the situation had become a major challenge for traders and small-scale entrepreneurs who rely heavily on electricity for their daily operations.

“It is really a serious issue here and it has affected many businesses,” she said.

Also in Oyo State, residents across several communities in the Ibadan metropolis said the worsening electricity supply had crippled economic activities.

A resident, Kunle Ajala, said businesses struggled to survive due to erratic electricity supply.

“It has been almost a week since we had stable electricity here. Even when power comes, it may not last up to three hours,” he said.

Another resident who is a barber, Bisi Adeoye, said unreliable electricity had severely affected his business and livelihood.

“I depend on electricity for my business, which has not been moving well for some time now but despite the poor supply the electricity company still sends high bills,” he said.

A welder, Musbau Muritala, said many artisans in the area had been forced to suspend work and resort to riding commercial motorcycles to make ends meet.

“I cannot do anything without electricity. Sometimes power comes around midnight and disappears before morning,” he said.

In Kaduna State, residents said repeated outages had caused losses of perishable food items stored in refrigerators.

A resident of Sabo in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Mrs Martina Aji, said the prolonged outage had caused losses of perishable food items in her refrigerator.

“Since last week, we have hardly had electricity. Food items, especially soup, have spoiled in my refrigerator,” she said.

Another resident, Jimmy Gaskiya, noted that the outages had forced many households to rely heavily on generators.

“Nothing seems to be working. The government should wake up to its responsibility and let the poor breathe,” he said.

In Taraba State, residents said electricity supply had fallen to between three and six hours daily.

A phone repair technician in Jalingo, Musa Ibrahim, said the outages had significantly reduced his income.

“Sometimes we get power for only three hours. It affects my work and earnings,” he said.

Similarly, a frozen food seller, Grace Yakubu, said repeated outages had led to spoilage of goods worth thousands of naira.

Despite the hardship, residents said no major protest had been organised, though many continue to express frustration over the prolonged outages.

The country’s heavy reliance on petrol and diesel generators further highlights the scale of the crisis. Industry estimates suggest that over 80 million Nigerian households and businesses rely on generators, creating a backup power market worth more than $10bn annually.

Electricity distribution companies have attributed the worsening outages partly to gas supply shortages affecting power generation plants.

The Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company confirmed that reduced gas supply had significantly affected electricity distribution across its franchise states.

The company supplies electricity to Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Zamfara and Sokoto states.

In a message to customers, the company said the situation had forced it to increase load shedding.

We are currently experiencing a reduction in power supply due to gas supply constraints affecting power generation,” the company said.

Industry insiders say several power generation companies are currently operating below capacity due to gas supply disruptions.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Villa may have shelved its planned disconnection from the national electricity grid despite ongoing investments in solar power infrastructure.

Senior State House officials told the press that the solar power facility recently installed at the Villa was still undergoing technical testing, making an immediate disconnection from the grid impossible.

The development comes about a month after the State House Permanent Secretary, Temitope Fashedemi, told the Senate Committee on Special Duties during the 2026 budget defence on February 11 that the Villa would fully transition away from the grid by March.

A senior official familiar with the project said the solar system had not yet reached full operational capacity.

“We are still in the testing phase. When the solar system becomes fully operational, then we will see the savings,” the official said.

The official pointed to the State House Medical Centre as evidence of the project’s viability, noting that the facility had operated almost entirely on solar energy since its installation was completed in May 2025.

He also revealed that the ongoing testing phase had uncovered possible billing discrepancies by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, with some transformers allegedly charging the Villa for electricity not supplied.

“We discovered that some transformers were not delivering power but were still being billed. That issue is being reviewed and the costs have been adjusted,” the official said.

The State House began a phased transition to solar power in late 2024 as part of efforts to reduce the rising cost of electricity and diesel used to power its generators.

At the time, officials said the solar project would eventually supply electricity to the State House complex in Abuja, the Presidential Wing, the State House Medical Centre and the former seat of power at Dodan Barracks in Lagos.

The first phase focused on the State House Medical Centre, where a 1.2-megawatt solar plant was constructed to provide uninterrupted power supply for medical equipment.

The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at the centre, Dr Dike Obalum, had said the project was designed to shield critical equipment from the effects of unstable electricity supply.

Despite the shift to solar power, another official dismissed suggestion that the Villa’s energy transition reflected a loss of confidence in the national grid.

“To say we are leaving the grid because we don’t trust it is not correct. The main objective is to reduce the huge amount of money spent on diesel and generator maintenance,” the official said.

He also noted that many of the generators currently used at the Villa had been in place since the complex was constructed in the early 1990s.

Budget documents reviewed by the press show that the State House headquarters allocated about N5.35bn between 2023 and 2026 for electricity bills, generator fuel and maintenance.

The sharpest increase occurred after the removal of fuel subsidy in 2023, when generator fuel costs surged dramatically.

Fuel allocations rose from N30.68m in 2023 and N37.96m in 2024 to N1.99bn each in the 2025 and 2026 budgets, representing an increase of more than 5,000 per cent in two years.

Electricity charges for the Villa were budgeted at N360.25m in 2023, N260.85m in 2024, and N311.09m annually for 2025 and 2026, while generator maintenance allocations rose to N17.28m in the 2025 and 2026 budgets.

In total, the 2026 budget earmarked about N2.32bn for generator fuel, electricity and maintenance at the State House.

To address the rising costs, the Federal Government approved N17bn for the solarisation of the Presidential Villa, with N10bn allocated in 2025 and N7bn in the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had earlier defended the initiative, arguing that the move aligns with global practices.

“The White House in Washington D.C. also uses solar power,” Onanuga said.

Before the solar project began, the State House had accumulated electricity debts nearing N1bn.

In February 2024, the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company listed the Presidential Villa among top government debtors with an outstanding bill of N923.87m, although the amount was later reconciled and reduced to N342.35m, which was subsequently settled.

POLICE INVESTIGATE ASSAULT ON NSCDC OFFICER AT OGUN SCHOOL

The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into an incident involving officers from Kemta Police Station in Abeokuta and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The matter has been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive probe.

In a statement released on Monday and obtained by the media, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the command is aware of the incident and will collaborate with the NSCDC to establish the facts.

“The Ogun State Police Command is aware of the incident that occurred at Government Technical College involving officers from Kemta Police Station and wishes to inform the public that the matter is currently under investigation, having been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department,” the statement read.

The command stated that the investigation will thoroughly review the circumstances of the incident to ensure due process is followed and that appropriate sanctions are applied where necessary.

It also reiterated the ongoing collaboration between security agencies in the state.

“The Command, in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, will conduct a comprehensive review of the incident to ensure due process is observed, apply sanctions as appropriate, and prevent a recurrence of such events,” the statement added.

The police also assured residents that security agencies in the state continue to maintain strong and cooperative working relationships to safeguard public safety.

“The Ogun State Police Command reassures the public that all security agencies operating within the state are sustaining cordial and collaborative relations in the interest of public safety,” Babaseyi stated.

The incident comes after a video went viral on social media, showing what appeared to be police brutality against a civil defence officer.

According to an unverified report by Independent Reporters on Facebook, the episode took place on March 5 at Government Technical College in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Officers from Kemta Police Station were accused of assaulting a civil defence officer and deploying tear gas within the school premises.

Eyewitnesses said the crisis started after a man running a nearby carwash, who had allegedly injured a student, was reportedly released by the police despite a formal complaint.

Tensions escalated when students confronted the suspect, prompting the intervention of the Divisional Police Officer of Kemta Police Station. Witnesses claimed that the officer ordered the arrest of students, and the civil defence officer who tried to intervene was attacked.

Several tear gas canisters were reportedly discharged inside the school, sparking panic among both students and teachers.

Phones belonging to teachers and the civil defence officer were also allegedly confiscated during the incident.

The alleged actions have provoked widespread outrage online, with demands for a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.

Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga, Femi Otedola, and Abdulsamad Rabiu have been named among Africa’s richest individuals in 2026.

According to the latest Africa Billionaires ranking by Forbes, Aliko Dangote maintained his status as Africa’s richest man, with an estimated net worth of $28.5 billion. He added approximately $4.6 billion to his fortune over the past year, largely driven by the strong performance of Dangote Cement on the Nigerian Exchange Limited.

Telecommunications mogul Mike Adenuga also retained his place among Africa’s wealthiest. The founder of Globacom and chairman of Conoil Producing remains one of Nigeria’s most influential entrepreneurs, with diversified holdings in telecoms, oil and gas, and banking.

Femi Otedola, chairman of Geregu Power Plc, also made the list despite a slight decline in his net worth over the year. Forbes estimates that the billionaire investor lost around $200 million following the sale of a majority stake in his power company at a price below market value.

The growth in Rabiu’s net worth was primarily fueled by BUA Cement’s strong performance, with its shares climbing 135% over the past year, surpassing the broader gains in the Nigerian stock market.

The 23 billionaires on the continent now have a combined net worth of $126.7 billion, marking a 21% increase from 2025, as they collectively added $20.3 billion to their fortunes.

Across Africa, billionaire wealth was supported by robust stock market performance, record corporate earnings, and greater currency stability in several economies.

South Africa leads with the highest number of billionaires on the list at seven, followed by Egypt with five, Nigeria with four, and Morocco with three.

The 2026 ranking does not feature any female billionaires from the continent.

POLICE BAN COVERED NUMBER PLATES AND UNREGISTERED VEHICLES IN LAGOS

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Jimoh Olohundare, has announced a ban on covering vehicle number plates in the state, warning that the police command will strictly enforce the directive.

The CP also warned against the use of heavily tinted windows that obstruct the front and right sides of vehicles, as well as the operation of unregistered vehicles on Lagos roads.

The Lagos State Police Commissioner, CP Jimoh Olohundare, made the announcement on Monday during a press briefing, following a meeting with officers and men of the command on directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Disu Olatunji.

He emphasized that all vehicle owners must ensure their cars are registered immediately after purchase, noting that the command will enforce the rules while upholding citizens’ human rights and dignity.

“It is prohibited for anyone in Lagos to cover their number plates or use tinted windows that block the front and right side of vehicles. The use of unregistered vehicles is also strictly forbidden,” he said.

CP Jimoh explained that the briefing was prompted by directives from the Inspector-General of Police during a leadership meeting in early March 2026, which highlighted the need for enhanced professionalism, supervision, and discipline within the force.

He noted that officers were sensitized on the new directives less than 24 hours after the meeting, with the aim of strengthening policing standards and improving service delivery.

The commissioner stressed the importance of strict supervision of officers to ensure respect for human rights and compliance with international best practices in policing.

He also reiterated the significance of community policing, urging officers to collaborate closely with residents to identify and tackle security challenges within their communities.

He stated that policing strategies across the state should be guided by the priorities of the community.

The CP further revealed that the Inspector-General of Police had stressed the need for enhanced training of personnel, particularly in crime prevention and managing security during major events.

He added that officers assigned to special duties must provide comprehensive security coverage from the start to the conclusion of their assignments.

The CP also noted that the IGP instructed police commands nationwide to return to fundamental policing principles, emphasizing closer engagement with the public.

He warned that any human rights violations by officers would not be tolerated, stressing that all personnel must respect and uphold the dignity and rights of Nigerians.

She noted the increasing number of female chief executives and managing directors emerging within Nigeria’s energy industry.

According to her, the development represents a significant shift in the sector’s leadership structure, which has traditionally been male-dominated. She also reflected on the notable strides recorded by women who have taken up top leadership roles in the energy sector in recent years.

Audrey further highlighted pioneering figures and key national energy leaders, including Olu Arowolo Verheijen, the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, whose policy advocacy has contributed to strengthening discussions on energy reforms and investment in the sector.

According to her, Oritsemeyiwa Amanorisewo Eyesan, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, marks a historic milestone in regulatory leadership and sends a strong message of inclusive governance in the energy sector.

She stressed that expanding infrastructure must go hand in hand with leadership diversity for the sector to achieve sustainable and resilient growth.

“As we develop pipelines, scale up distribution networks, and invest in critical gas infrastructure, we must also cultivate leadership systems that embody inclusion and foresight,” she said. “Gas is central to Nigeria’s energy transition, and the leaders guiding that journey must reflect the nation’s diversity.”

Audrey added that this decade presents a unique chance to redefine expectations around who leads energy institutions. She urged boards, regulators, and investors to institutionalise inclusive succession planning rather than view female leadership appointments as isolated achievements.

“At Falcon, we regard inclusion not as a campaign slogan but as a core governance principle,” she said. “The progress we are seeing across the sector must not be episodic—it should be sustained, measurable, and irreversible.”

2027: TINUBU, APC IN PANIC MODE – AMAECHI

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu and leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are increasingly uneasy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amaechi, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the assertion while speaking to supporters in Rivers State, stating that the President and key APC leaders are not as popular as they portray.

He further alleged that the ruling party is trying to intimidate Nigerian voters in the lead-up to the elections.

Amaechi questioned claims of popularity by the President and other political figures, suggesting their recent actions reflect growing anxiety.

“I thought the President said they were popular. I thought those people you asked me about were popular,” he said.

He argued that recent political moves were driven by fear rather than confidence.

“All these actions they are taking are signs of panic. They are afraid. If they are not afraid, let us meet in the field and allow the people to decide who they want,” Amaechi stated.

He accused political actors of trying to impose candidates on voters rather than allowing the public to freely choose their leaders.

“What they are trying to do is impose politicians on the people. What the ADC offers is an opportunity for Nigerians to choose the right person,” he added.

Speaking on how the party intends to address voter apathy ahead of the 2027 elections, the former Rivers State governor said the ADC would focus strongly on grassroots mobilisation.

“Our response to intimidation will depend on mobilisation. We must encourage people to come out,” he said.

According to him, efforts to discourage voters from participating are deliberate.

“The reason they are acting this way is because they want apathy. They do not want people to come out and vote because if they do, they may not vote for the APC,” he said.

Amaechi also questioned the achievements of the current administration.

“Even if you intend to vote for APC, you should ask yourself what they have achieved. There was a lot of talk about the Lagos-Calabar coastal road. Where is that road today?” he asked.

He noted that during his tenure as Minister of Transportation, he could provide evidence of projects executed.

Amaechi also highlighted some of the projects completed while he served in the Buhari administration, insisting that Nigerians across different regions benefited from the government’s policies and programmes.

“Let this government point to just one thing it has done, either in the North or in the South, aside from looting public funds,” he added.

RIVERS ASSEMBLY SCREENS FUBARA’S COMMISSIONER NOMINEES

Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are currently reviewing the commissioner nominees submitted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Nine nominees were brought into the House around 10 a.m. on Monday.

The nominees are Datonye Alasia, Tonye Bellgam, Temple Nwofor, Peters Nwagor, Mrs. Charity Deemua, Tamuno Williams, Lekue Kenneth, Otonye TKD Amachree, and Amairigha Hart.

A video of the screening, broadcast on Arise TV and monitored by PUNCH Online, showed each nominee taking the podium to introduce themselves and respond to questions from the lawmakers.

Governor Fubara presented the list of nominees to the House on March 5, 2026, after dissolving the State Executive Council.

Earlier, the Assembly, through a notice signed by Clerk Dr. Emeka Amadi on March 3, 2026, instructed the nominees to submit 40 copies of their curricula vitae, copies of their credentials, and proof of tax compliance in preparation for the screening and confirmation process.

This move comes in the wake of the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State following President Bola Tinubu’s lifting of the six-month state of emergency on September 17, 2025.

The state of emergency, declared on March 18, 2025, had suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the House of Assembly amid an extended political standoff between Fubara and his predecessor, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, over control of Rivers State’s political apparatus.

Dr. Phillips O. Dr. Phillips O Salawu was the stabilizing force in the Government of His Excellency, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, IBRO, (2003-2012) when he served as his Deputy Governor.

Dr. Salawu gave his maximum support, loyalty and cooperation as a Deputy Governor and there was Peace and Stability throughout their 9-year reign in Government House, Lokoja.

At the National level, Dr. Salawu was selected as a Member of the PDP BoT, the exalted Board of Trustees of the then Ruling Party since February 2013 in recognition of his intellectual, technical, professional, institutional, material and logistic resources which he duly deployed at the crucial moment in the building of the solid foundation of the PDP which eventually made the party to have competitive advantage and stochastic dominance over all other political parties in Nigeria, upto 2015, after which things started to fall apart!

In showcasing his strategic thought at the National level, Dr. Salawu developed and proposed a Peculiar Political Model at the 2014 Nigerian National Conference to solve a major Political Problem in Nigeria by arguing for the Optimal Rotation of Executive Political Power between the Northern and the Southern parts of Nigeria; and simultaneously rotating same, amongst the Six Geopolitical Zones of the country.

He argued for two Vice-Presidents to have a joint ticket with the President whereby the three personalities, the Political-Trinity in the Presidential Election would go on a single ticket.
The VP-Political Affairs would come from the same Region/same GeoPolitical Zone with the reigning President.
This is to cover the unlikely Political Accidents so as to maintain the already established Balance of Power and Political Equilibrium.

The VP-Economic Affairs will come from the other region, North or South as the case may be, to ensure both regions are well represented in the National Government.

The two Vice-Presidents are to take up the Ministerial Portfolios allocated to their respective states and would not be idle apart from being the Heads of the Political and the Economic Affairs of the Presidency respectively.

Similar proposals are being made at the State and the Local Government levels for their Executive Administration.

Barrister Phillips Salawu developed this peculiar Political Model in his LLB Research Project in Constitutional Law at Baze University Abuja, an illustrious Research Work rated grade “A” by the University Authority that may soon be published for the wider public readership.

It is noteworthy that this peculiar Political Model originally proposed by Dr Phillips Salawu has been debated at the National Assembly for implementation in our constitutional review.

The current Presidency in 2026 is also thinking of Executive Power Rotation in the similar format suggested by the ingenious Research Work of Barrister Phillips Omeiza Salawu in his contributions to the Nigerian Constitutional Development as an upcoming Constitutional Lawyer.

DEFAMATION: COURT ORDERS SOCIAL MEDIA CRITIC TO PAY LEGAL PRACTITIONER N5M IN DAMAGES

A High Court in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has directed social media user Mr. Chika Nwoba to pay N5 million in damages to legal practitioner Ugadu Chinedu over alleged defamation.

Nwoba was accused, in a suit numbered HAB/75/2024, of posting defamatory content about Chinedu on his Facebook page during 2024 and 2025.

After reviewing all evidence and exhibits, Justice Franklin Edem ruled that Nwoba had defamed Chinedu, stating: “A declaration is hereby made that exhibits P1, P5, P9, P10, and P11, published by the Defendant on 15/6/2024, 18/9/2024, 18/2/2025, and 17/7/2025 on his Facebook page against the plaintiff, are defamatory.”

For his actions in publishing the defamatory content, the court ordered the defendant to pay the plaintiff N5,000,000 (five million naira) as general and aggravated damages.

The court also issued a perpetual injunction preventing the defendant, along with his agents, servants, or associates, from making any further defamatory statements about the plaintiff on any media platform.

Furthermore, the defendant is required to retract the defamatory publications within 30 days of this judgment by posting a retraction on his Facebook page for seven consecutive days, accompanied by a formal apology to the plaintiff.
