American R&B singer Chris Brown has avoided jail after a UK court handed him a suspended prison sentence on Monday for his involvement in a 2023 brawl at a London nightclub.
Brown, who pleaded guilty to an affray offence, was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for one year. This means he will not serve time behind bars unless he commits another offence during the suspension period.
The 37-year-old singer arrived at Southwark Crown Court in London wearing a black face mask and cap. He had admitted to the offence during a court appearance in July.
Sentencing Brown, Judge Tony Baumgartner described violence in a crowded nightclub as a serious matter, warning that it poses risks not only to the intended victim but also to other people present.
Prosecutors had accused Brown and his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, an American national, of carrying out a “vicious and unprovoked attack” at a crowded nightclub. They alleged that Brown used a glass bottle to strike the victim on the head twice.
By pleading guilty to affray, Brown avoided a trial on other charges, including attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon, identified as a bottle. He had previously denied those allegations.
The charges stemmed from an incident at Tape, a private members’ club in central London, on February 19, 2023, while Brown was touring the United Kingdom.
According to the prosecution, the victim was struck several times with a bottle before being chased, punched and kicked.
Brown rose to fame in the mid-2000s with hit songs such as Kiss, Kiss and has sold tens of millions of records worldwide. However, his career has also been marked by several legal controversies.
In 2009, he was convicted of assaulting his then-girlfriend, Rihanna, before the Grammy Awards, an incident that forced the singer to miss the ceremony.
In 2012, Brown was involved in a nightclub altercation in New York with members of rapper Drake’s entourage. French basketball player Tony Parker sustained an eye injury after being struck by a thrown glass bottle during the incident.
Two years later, Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting a fan in Washington.
Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray over the London nightclub incident. He was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for one year.
