Troops engaged in counter-insurgency operations in the North-East have been directed to sustain pressure on terrorist groups as military operations continue across the region.

The directive was disclosed in a press release shared on the official page of the Nigerian Army on March 8, 2026.

According to the statement, the Chief of Army Staff issued the directive during an operational assessment visit to the Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, in Maiduguri, Borno State, on March 7.

The Nigerian Army said the visit was aimed at evaluating the security situation within the theatre of operations, reviewing ongoing activities and strengthening coordination with other security stakeholders working to tackle remaining threats in the region.

While addressing the troops, the Army Chief commended their dedication and sacrifices in the ongoing operations across the theatre.

He stressed that troops must remain proactive in their engagements against terrorist groups.

“The days of remaining in defensive positions are over. Troops must continue to take the fight to the terrorists wherever they are found,” he said.

The Army Chief also emphasised the need for improved intelligence gathering, effective coordination among units and sustained operational momentum to consolidate gains already recorded against terrorist groups.

He further directed troops to maintain an aggressive operational posture in order to deny terrorists freedom of movement, particularly during the closing phase of the Ramadan period and beyond.

During the visit, the Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, Abdulsalam Abubakar, briefed the Army Chief on recent operational activities, achievements and challenges encountered within the theatre.

Abubakar assured the Army leadership of the troops’ continued commitment and professionalism in ongoing efforts to restore peace and security across the North-East.

The statement added that troops involved in the operation remain resolute in carrying out their mandate despite challenges recorded in some locations.
