COURT BARS TURAKI-LED NWC, NULLIFIES PDP NATIONAL CONVENTION

The federal high court in Ibadan, Oyo state, has canceled the national meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which happened in the state on November 15, 2025.
On Friday, Judge Uche Agomoh made a decision that stopped the party‘s leaders elected during the meeting from acting as if they were the official leaders of the party.
Agomoh ruled that the November national convention was organised in flagrant disregard for the court orders.
The judge said that the PDP cannot ignore the court‘s orders and at the same time ask the court for permission to take actions that go against those orders.
The judge said the PDP can only work through the caretaker committee until a proper and legal national convention is held.
A group from the PDP’s national working committee, led by Kabiru Turaki, who is the national chairman, filed a case asking the court to recognize the national convention and confirm the NWC members who were chosen during that convention.
In November 2025, the faction organised its national convention in Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
During the convention, 20 NWC members were chosen, including Turaki as national chairman, Hamza Akuyan Koshe as deputy national chairman for the north, Daniel Ambrose Woye as deputy national chairman for the south, and Arapaja Taofeek Gbola-Oladejo as national secretary.
A few days before the convention, there were conflicting court orders about holding the national convention.
On October 31, 2025, the federal high court in Abuja halted the PDP from proceeding with the convention.
Omotosho, the main judge, said the court had seen that the group did not hold proper state meetings before the planned national meeting, as required by the 1999 constitution, the INEC rules, and their own rules.
On November 4, 2025, the Oyo high court told the PDP and Umar Damagum, the former national leader, to go ahead with the national meeting set for November 15 in Ibadan.
On November 11, 2025, Peter Lifu, a judge in Abuja’s federal high court, stopped the PDP from holding the national meeting.
The group of PDP members who support Nyesom Wike, the minister of the federal capital territory, did not take part in the national meeting.
