Cristiano Ronaldo still sets UCL record despite goal streak ending
Cristiano Ronaldo set a record with his 96th win in the Champions League on Wednesday, though he saw his goal streak come to an end.
Ronaldo has now appeared in more games in which his team won than any other player, moving past Iker Casillas, as Real Madrid won 2-1 at Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semifinal.
The victory was also an important one for Real Madrid as a club as well — they became the first team to win 150 Champions League games.
The landmark victory came on the same night that Ronaldo moved level with Xavi for the second-most appearances in the competition with 151. Only former Real keeper Casillas has played in more games at 167.
However, Ronaldo was largely frustrated at Bayern, as he was held without a shot on target for the first time in his last 39 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions.
The game also ended his run of 12 straight club games with a goal, which had been tied for the longest in his career.
Ronaldo’s record run of 11 consecutive Champions League with a goal also came to an end — he had scored in all 10 of his previous UCL games this season.
The Portuguese star thought he had a goal in the second half, but the play was stopped after the referee ruled he had brought the ball down with his arm.
