Former Manchester City and Spain midfielder David Silva has ended his retirement at the age of 40, returning to professional football with Hong Kong Premier League club Sha Tin.
Silva retired in 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during pre-season training with Real Sociedad. He is now set to join Sha Tin and work towards making his return to competitive football.
The former City playmaker enjoyed an illustrious international career with Spain, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and two European Championships. During his 10-year spell at Manchester City, he also won four Premier League titles.
Silva claimed 11 major trophies with City and scored 60 Premier League goals, with his contribution to the club recognised by a statue outside the Etihad Stadium.
“I’m so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong,” Silva said in an Instagram video.
Sha Tin confirmed that Silva will initially settle into life in Hong Kong before joining his new teammates in training and working on his fitness ahead of his debut.
“David Silva will be in Hong Kong soon to settle in, link up with squad training, and build up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut,” the club said.
Sha Tin currently sit eighth in the Hong Kong Premier League after four matches and are scheduled to host Hong Kong Football Club on Sunday, October 18.
